On April 27, 2010, Dr. Mathew R. Sapp re-attached the Retina in my right eye.

Once again, I was reminded of my convictions described on page 79 of "The Synergistic Life Style":

"We are wonderfully designed and created by a great and loving God."

Our eye is just one of many complex biological systems that are each unique, yet codependent on each other for their very existence.

The brilliant young, dedicated, and capable medical doctors and associates that took care of me, reassured me that our World will be in good hands in the next two generations.

Our job is to pass it to them with honesty, integrity, and in better condition than when our parents passed the baton to us.

The following was copied from the Spiritual chapter of my book, The Synergistic Life Style.

FAITH - We all will suffer from doubts. When we are in the valleys of our lives we may ask where God is and why are we in the valley. When everything is going perfect, we may become puffed up and leave God out of our decision making. Either way we lose when our faith becomes weak or we take over our lives without seeking God’s guidance. We also will suffer the consequences from carnal decisions we make during those times.

I learned early on that faith involved developing a philosophy of life to live by that I could not fully prove. If I could prove every facet, then faith would not be required. I like the acrostic for FAITH, ”Forsaking All, I Take Him”. I was in my early 60’s before I quit asking God to fully prove Himself to me, and I consider that I have lived a spirit filled life. I just felt that if I reached a point that questions our doubts would never creep into my mind, I would have attained an important milestone. It just isn’t going to happen, and now I am content to let God be God and I will continue in my walk with Him as a sinner, saved by grace. That reminds me of an acrostic that I have heard for GRACE…”Gods Riches at Christ Expense”. God has taken care of all the details; I just need to press on.

June and I taught the twelfth grade Sunday school class at Gardendale First Baptist Church in the late eighties. While teaching the senior boys and girls together at Gardendale, we often left the scheduled lesson topic to chase a rabbit down another trail. On one occasion, the class raised the question of how we could prove that the Bible could be relied on as authentic from cover to cover. I challenged everyone to research the topic for the next few weeks and we would compile all of the evidence until we reached a consensus.  The class agreed on a list of things that satisfied them to live their lives with faith that the Bible could be relied on from cover to cover. I would like to share some of the conclusions these bright seniors agreed on.

  • God has placed a desire for a supreme being in everyone’s heart and a knowledge that there must be something after physical death (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
  • The Holy Spirit within us convicts us and empowers us. The more we use it the stronger it becomes in us.
  • The Bible is consistent although written by forty authors and in three languages. The Old Testament, consisting of 39 books, was written over a 1,000 year period. The 27 books of the New Testament cover a 100 year period.  God inspired these writings (Hebrews 1:1). These men came from different backgrounds and cultures. When you read one part of the Bible, you can read it with the confidence that it will not be in conflict with messages taught in another section.
  • The Bible is full of fulfilled prophecy.
  • The continuous line to Jesus was miraculously preserved in the history of Israel. For example Joseph could have easily been killed by his brothers versus ending up in Egypt to continue the lineage.
  • There is no basis conflict between science and the Bible. Francis S. Collins, one of the world’s leading biologists, led the federal project that mapped the 3.1 billion chemical base pairs in humanity’s DNA. He directed the U.S. government program on applying the DNA information to medical treatments. He is an advocate for faith’s compatibility with science. He is a member of the American Scientific Affiliation of scientists that affirms “the divine inspiration, trustworthiness and authority of the Bible”.
  • Archaeology continues to confirm the historicity of the Old Testament.
  • Most astronomers believe in God.
  • The very universe screams that there has to be a grand designer and sustainer (Psalm 8:3). There are over 100 billion galaxies with the earth being just the right size and distance from the sun and moon and tilted on just the right 23 degree axis (Romans 1:19-20).
  • The empty tomb testifies to a risen Savior. I believe without a doubt that the Sanhedrin and Sadducees would have documented any fallacies in the resurrection story. They hated the fact that Jesus was teaching a way for all to be saved without needing their formal positions. The Roman soldiers guarding the tomb would not have risked the penalties for failing their duties by overlooking a hoax of any kind.
  • Lives throughout history have been changed due to an encounter with the risen savior. The disciples and others that saw Jesus after he rose from the tomb were changed in a way that can not be explained in any way except the radical change that comes when we make Jesus the lord of our lives. Most of the disciples, who had fled to avoid being crucified or punished in some other way before Jesus died, were willing to be exiled, imprisoned and martyred for His cause after the resurrection.
  • We see lives that are radically changed today after they have been turned over to Jesus as Savior and Lord. People who had tried for years to conquer their demons have been freed from the shackles of alcohol, drugs, overeating, smoking, gambling, anger and other addictions.
  • The survival and existence of the New Testament Church throughout the centuries testifies to a creator greater than all of the powers that have come against the church.
  • At our new laboratory to provide teaching moments for our twelve grandchildren and their friends - the lake house - we have a house for Martins to live in from late-March to mid-July. They return each year just like clockwork to have a new family. On March 9th of 2007, I was trimming trees to use the limbs to build a habitat for Bass under the fishing pier, big bass I hope. About eight Martins visited our birdhouse, which is actually a bird apartment containing separate compartments to accommodate 24 families of Martins.  They also came last year and the year before. After reading about them, I discovered they were advanced scouts and the entire group would be there in a few days. They left before the day was over to report back to the group that we were ready for them.  Is that not amazing? I also read that they spend their winters in Central and South America and the same group returns to our lake house each year. Tell me someone did not design their navigation system and living habits!
  • God sent His Son to not only die for our sins, but to provide a living example of someone who lived a sinless life and sought to live within God’s perfect will. We have Jesus’ example of what God is like and also how to live our lives (John 8:12, John 14:6, Colossians 2:9).
  • There is absolutely no way anyone with a grain of common sense can support the conclusion that life started from nothing and evolved into the complex systems existing today. For example the human body is made up of trillions of cells and complex systems that are each unique yet codependent on each other for their very existence: Skeletal – Muscular – Digestive – Urinary – Respiratory – Circulatory – Nervous – Reproductive – Eyes – Ears – Nose – Taste buds – Bones.
  • I have studied the Bible for fifty years and attempted to follow the principles for integrity, honesty, commitment, financial stewardship, marriage, raising children, honoring parents and the many other truths for life contained therein. The principles work and they do not conflict with each other even though some may appear to at first.
  • Young couples who have abused credit cards and other debt ask me how they can be expected to tithe when their budget is running a deficit and their debts keep growing. We tell them that they have slipped into the sins of debt and lack of stewardship as most other young couples have. The answer is to set goals and develop a plan to control their debt while growing to a position of tithing. I believe that God will honor that plan. God will never ask us to violate one of His principles (pay your debts) just to honor another (tithe). He does want our best efforts to return to the correct scriptural balance.
  • The founding fathers of the United States shared a common morality and belief in the Bible: - John Adams said “We have no government armed with power capable of contending ewith human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people”. - John Quincy Adams said, "Is it not that the declaration of independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer's mission on earth. That it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of christianity". - Thomas Jefferson said, "...These liberties are of the gift of God. They are not to be violated but with His wrath..." - James Madison said “We have staked the whole future of America …upon the capacity…to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God”. - George Washington declared “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey His will  ...It is impossible to rightly govern without the Bible”.  - James Wilson said “Christianity is a part of the common law of America”. - Patrick Henry said ‘this great nation was founded…by Christians…on the Gospel of Jesus Christ”. - Benjamin Franklin said, "The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: That God governs in the affairs of men...I believe that without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel". John Fay (First Chief Justice of the Supreme Court) said: "The Bible is the word of God and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and in the next... It is the duty and privilege and interest... to select and prefer Christians for our rulers."
  • The Bible says: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord...If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Forsaking all, I take Him (FAITH) by God’s riches at Christ’s Expense (GRACE). June and I accept the Bible as God’s inspired and inerrant Word.
